Creating a Therapeutic Environment at the Mason Clinic with Gerflor Vinyl Flooring

18 Sep 2026 | Projects

E Tū Wairua Hinengaro – Mason Clinic is a 60-bed forensic mental health facility in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, developed to replace four outdated units with a single, contemporary environment that supports recovery. In spaces where dignity, safety, and day-to-day operational resilience must coexist, the floor is not a background decision; it is one of the largest continuous surfaces shaping how people experience the building.

Healthcare performance, without an institutional feel

For the design team, the challenge was clear: deliver finishes that can withstand intensive healthcare use while contributing to spaces that feel composed and non-clinical. Belgotex New Zealand recommended a suite of Gerflor vinyl flooring solutions selected for both aesthetic intent and long-term suitability in healthcare settings. Across more than 5,000 m², vinyl flooring was installed throughout circulation areas, patient bedrooms, whānau rooms, and shared activity spaces - each zone requiring its own balance of visual tone, acoustic comfort, and maintenance expectations.

The completed facility prioritises dignity, connection to nature, clear movement, and a calm therapeutic atmosphere.

Durability and cleanability as design enablers

In a mental health facility, cleaning regimes are frequent and rigorous, and surfaces need to remain stable and presentable over time. Many of the specified Gerflor products incorporate Evercare or Protecsol 2 surface treatments, supporting strong resistance to staining and chemicals while simplifying upkeep. Built-in antimicrobial protection helps inhibit the growth of common pathogens, reinforcing hygienic performance in a way that aligns with clinical requirements but supports a more residential, restorative atmosphere.

Zoning through pattern, colour, and acoustic comfort

Flooring choices were tailored to how each area is used. Gerflor Premium Acoustic – Neopolis Central Park was installed across 2,560 m² of circulation spaces, where its contemporary softness helps maintain an open, light character and its high-density foam backing improves acoustic comfort. In selected communal and activity areas, Gerflor Premium Compact – Poesy Slam introduces darker contrast and subtle metallic accents to define zones and support intuitive wayfinding.

Patient bedrooms were finished in Gerflor Taralay Impression Acoustic – Gentlemen Clear, a carpet-inspired aesthetic that helps bring warmth while maintaining the hygiene and durability expected of vinyl. For whānau rooms, where connection and familiarity are critical, Gerflor Taralay Impression Acoustic – Rivau Nature provides a natural palette and herringbone timber pattern that feels recognisable and welcoming.

This commercial flooring project demonstrates how specification and detailing can help create calmer, more welcoming healthcare interiors without compromising performance.
