ProBac helps support low carbon flooring goals without sacrificing performance

A lighter carpet tile backing can help reduce material use and transport emissions without compromising on performance, aesthetics, or underfoot comfort.

Interior finishes, including flooring, can account for a meaningful share of a commercial building's embodied carbon, particularly in projects where refurbishments and fit outs occur regularly over the life of a space. For architects and interior designers working to reduce environmental impact, flooring is one of the areas where incremental improvements can add up quickly, especially on large scale projects.

Why backing matters

When comparing carpet tiles, the backing can influence both material intensity and transport impacts. A lighter backing generally means less raw material per square metre and lower emissions associated with shipping from manufacturing through to site delivery.

Belgotex's ProBac backing is made from polyester felt and is 30% lighter than traditional PVC and bitumen backings. In practice, that reduction in weight can support lower embodied carbon through reduced material usage and reduced transport emissions.

ProBac also contains 75% recycled polyester derived from post-consumer waste, helping divert plastic waste from landfill and supporting circular economy outcomes.

Built for commercial performance and designed to look good for years to come

Durability is another sustainability lever, especially in high-traffic commercial environments where premature replacement increases both cost and carbon. Our ProBac backed carpet tile ranges are designed for commercial performance in demanding, high traffic environments. All of the ranges share the same stainproof and fade proof qualities, using solution dyed nylon yarn for long term appearance retention.

Across our new ranges with ProBac, you will find contemporary textures and a warm palette of neutrals and botanical tones. Mix layouts and colourways to suit different commercial spaces, from subtle, calm schemes to more layered, textural floor patterns.

Health, wellbeing, and acoustics

Health and wellbeing considerations sit alongside carbon in many sustainability frameworks. Independently tested for low VOC emissions, our new carpet tiles with ProBac backing meet the requirements of leading green building rating tools including Green Star. It is also Global GreenTag PHD PlatinumHEALTH certified, providing assurance the product has been assessed across its lifecycle for potential health risks.

Acoustic comfort is also a key driver in workplace, education and multi tenant environments. Compared to carpet tiles with traditional PVC or bitumen backings, our new carpet tiles deliver improved sound absorption and impact noise reduction. ProBac backing also provides a more cushioned underfoot feel, supporting a more comfortable indoor environment.

At the end of its service life, the carpet tiles with ProBac can be disassembled for recycling or reuse, helping reduce waste and contributing to a lower whole of life carbon footprint.

Belgotex provides architects and designers with technical documentation, environmental certifications and Masterspec specification support.

All of the above carpet tile ranges feature ProBac, the latest innovation in carpet tile backing from Belgotex. Contact the Belgotex team for guidance on your next project.
